Juan Diego Flórez — Not well

I don’t know what the matter is, but Juan Diego Flórez is not well.  He won’t be singing in the April performances.  I hope he has recovered by May 10th!

Here is the statement from the Met:

Javier Camarena will sing the role of Prince Ramiro in the season’s three initial performances of Rossini’s La Cenerentola on April 21, 25, and 28, replacing Juan Diego Flórez, who is ill. Flórez is scheduled to return for the three final performances of the opera, on May 2, May 6, and the May 10 matinee, which will be transmitted worldwide as part of the Met’s Live in HDseries.

Camarena, who made his company debut in 2011 as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia,  starred as Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula to great acclaim last month at the Met. Widely known for his portrayals of the major bel canto tenor roles, he has previously appeared as Prince Ramiro at the Paris Opera and the Théatre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He will again perform the role this summer in Salzburg and Munich.

La Cenerentola also stars Joyce DiDonato in the title role, Pietro Spagnoli in his Met debut as Dandini, Alessandro Corbelli as Don Magnifico, and Luca Pisaroni as Alidoro. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the performances.
